COPYRIGHT
COPYRIGHT
Things have definitely changed within the past 10-15 years where copyrights are concerned. I vividly remember filling out the the P.A. form and mailing in the disc as a physical deposit.
The snail mail process was living up to its reputation and the actual document didn't arrive at my door until a full year later. I remember feeling annoyed to have to shell out the $65 for it to drop to $35 a few months later.
The funny thing about it is I no longer own a copy of the album I had copywritten at that time. The only copy in existence is the physical deposit at the copy right office. It was complete trash so it's just as well...lol.
These days you can do everything online so life has gotten a lot easier for new artists. The barriers have been destroyed, so now there is nothing stopping you from being sucessful in music except lack of knowledge and just pure laziness.
All you have to do is read and learn @ copyright.gov there is no reason this should be a huge concern. Once you have completed the process make sure to register your song(s) or album with your P.R.O (performance rights organization)to be sure you are getting your due.
Remember, the music industry is changing and new royalties have emerged due to sites like YouTube and Spotify. Just copyrights alone are not enough to make sure you're collecting all the money you're owed.
Stay vigilant and keep up to date on the latest developments in the new music industry!
